Ethan Cunningham Photography
Hello
Hello! I’m Ethan Cunningham, a Geelong-based photographer with a deep-rooted passion for capturing the world through my lens. I graduated from RMIT, where I honed my craft in photography, but my journey started long before that.
My love for photography began in childhood, exploring landscapes alongside my mum as my first partner in creativity. Since then, my focus has evolved towards sports photography, where the thrill of the moment and the dynamics of action truly captivate me. However, my enthusiasm doesn’t stop there—I thoroughly enjoy capturing a wide range of subjects, from breathtaking landscapes to intimate portraits.
Join me as I continue to document and celebrate the moments that make life uniquely memorable.
My Story
I grew up in Kyneton, where in 2016, I received my first camera—a Sony a6300—for Christmas. Before that, I enjoyed taking photos with my phone. My mum and I would take our cameras everywhere, and she taught me the basics of photography. As I explored different techniques, I turned to YouTube to learn about astrophotography, light painting, double exposure, photo-collage, tilt-shift effects, and long exposures. My passion led me to study photography from Year 9 through Year 12, and I continued experimenting and learning.
In 2020, I moved to Melbourne with my partner Annabel to study a Bachelor of Art Photography at RMIT. This transition shifted my focus from landscape to street photography. During my studies, I gained skills in studio lighting, location lighting, technical techniques, client relations, and theoretical knowledge.
A standout moment in my career was shooting the Uni Sports Nationals at the Gold Coast in 2023. I was part of the RMIT media team, tasked with capturing the RMIT athletes, or Redbacks. Over a week, our small but dynamic team of three covered 15 teams across 12 sports. Despite our size, we produced a constant stream of content, including stories, athlete interviews, daily recaps, and video podcasts. Working with Michael Serpel and Sofia Ruggiero was incredibly rewarding. The experience taught me valuable lessons in time management and how to distill thousands of photos into a select few each day.
